The influence of water–rock interactions on household well water in an area of high prevalence chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu)

Abstract Poor drinking water quality in household wells is hypothesised as being a potential contributor to the high prevalence of chronic kidney disease uncertain aetiology (CKDu) among farming communities Medawachchiya area, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka. One natural processes that can affect dissolution minerals contained within an aquifer by water–rock interactions (WRIs). Here we present comprehensive assessment WRIs and their influence on chemistry spring waters area combining measurements environmental isotopes, such strontium, lithium stable carbon isotopes inorganic parameters, modelling geochemical mass balance reactions between rainfall groundwater samples. Our results reveal presence dissolved from both silicate carbonate minerals, with isotopic ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) ratios up 0.7316. Geochemical prior Sr studies Wanni Complex bedrock suggest these strontium values may be result biotite dissolution. We also identify uranium contributed silicates, albeit at concentrations too low constitute known health risk.
